Carefully-guided lessons develop the language skills, critical thinking, and learning strategies required for academic success. Becky Tarver Chase is an experienced English instructor who has taught all subject areas including reading, writing, grammar, communication skills, and test preparation. She has worked at universities and in private programs in the United States, Mexico, and Thailand. Her current focus is on creating effective language-learning materials, and she is one of the authors of the World English, Reading Explorer, Close-Up, and Pathways series from National Geographic Learning. Christien Lee, who has dual Canadian and British citizenship, has worked in English Language Teaching for more than 20 years.
She spoke several languages including French, German, Spanish, Norwegian, and Korean. Explicit and clear skill introduction and practice throughout the program helps learners to develop language proficiency and develop academic skills. Using authentic and relevant content from National Geographic, including video, charts, and other infographics, Pathways prepares students to work effectively and confidently in an academic environment. She has authored numerous ELT textbooks and online educational materials for a wide range of audiences, including community colleges, universities, corporations, and primary and secondary schools. Pathways, Second Edition, is a global, five-level academic English program with materials which provide learners with instruction and practice in listening and speaking, and for reading and writing.
She is currently a professor in the Intensive English Department at Houston Community College. Paul MacIntyre earned his MA in TESL from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. Paul has teaching experience in Japan and the United States, and as an editor participated in the development of numerous ELT courses for classrooms around the world.

Kathy Najafi holds an MAELT from Reading University, London, U.K. She has extensive ESL/EFL teaching experience in the United Arab Emirates, Iran and the United States. Besides teaching all English subject areas, Kathy is a published author, editor, translator and curriculum developer. She is the author of numerous VESL manuals for Houston Community College and Lone Star College. Ms. Najafi is also creator, co-producer and host of HCCTV’s ‘Bridging Cultures’. A past president of TexTESOL IV, Kathy also enjoys presenting on Cross-Cultural Awareness / Intercultural Communication.
As a writer, he has contributed to various major course book and testing programs. For National Geographic Learning he is proud to have authored Reading Explorer 2, Reading Explorer 4, and most recently Pathways Listening and Speaking 4. Through our partnership with National Geographic, they develop the language and skills they need to be successful global citizens and leaders. Laurie Blass is a writer and editor specializing in print and digital English Language Teaching materials. In Linguistics and a TESL certificate from the University of Pittsburgh and has taught ESL in the United States and France. She is the author/co-author of over 40 ELT titles representing a wide range of audiences, from adult education to English for academic purposes. Online Workbooks, powered by MyELT, include automatically graded activities and video clips for learners to practice the skills taught in the Student Books. Viewing in each unit uses engaging and relevant National Geographic video clips to give learners additional content and skills practice. Integrated exam tasks prepare students for standardized tests like TOEFL and IELTS. Critical thinking activities are integrated throughout each unit, and help develop independent learners.
His roles have included teacher, teacher trainer, curriculum developer, materials writer, director of studies, consultant, and author. In addition, he founded and ran an award-winning private language school in Canada for almost ten years. He has wide experience in ELT, but specializes in academic English and, particularly, exam preparation. Currently, his focus is on developing innovative e-learning materials and writing textbooks.
Kristin Johannsen held an MA in Applied English Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. She had extensive experience teaching English in Japan, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, France, and the United States. She has presented her ideas on global issues at multiple conferences around the world and was a published author.
