The Grange Nursing Home, Hedge End, Southampton

We acknowledge our resident's right to be treated as individuals and ensure that all care given reflects this. The attractive garden and terrace provide a peaceful place in the sun, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. We offer individual and group activities for the residents of The Grange Nursing Home.

At the time of our inspection the service was providing residential care to 60 older people. It provides a service for people with complex needs including, physical disabilities, mental health problems and acquired brain injuries. It is registered to accommodate a maximum of 78 people, and is situated on the edge of a residential area in Hedge End. We carried out an unannounced comprehensive inspection of this service on 5 and 6 January 2016. This was because people’s care plans did not always fully reflect people’s health and nutritional needs to provide staff with up to date information.

The Grange Nursing Home is a large nursing home situated in Southampton, with 63 beds. Additionally, The Grange Nursing Home is able to support people with physical disabilities. The service had an open and positive culture that encouraged involvement of people, their families, staff and other professional organisations. Staff spoke positively about the management and had a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities. Audits and quality assurance processes were effective in driving service improvements. The service understood their legal responsibilities for reporting and sharing information with other services.

Our staff are handpicked for their skills and clinical expertise, so that we can continue to provide and improve the highest standard of care for which we are known. All care staff are given the opportunity to undertake NVQ training. Medical care from a qualified nurse, and treatment for residents with illness or injuries. For services we haven't rated we use ticks and crosses to show whether we've asked them to take further action or taken enforcement action against them. – the service isn't performing as well as it should and we have told the service how it must improve.

There was a positive and open culture within the service, which encouraged people’s involvement and their feedback was used to drive improvements. There were a range of systems in place to assess and monitor the quality and safety of the service. People’s care plans did not always fully reflect people’s health and nutritional needs to provide staff with up to date information. – there are some services which we can’t rate, while some might be under appeal from the provider. Built in 1883, Hollybank is a lovely Victorian House, with a large garden. Residents are encouraged to live an active life where possible and to pursue personal hobbies and activities.

In the last report by the CQC from October 2018, the care home received an overall rating of good. The Care Quality Commission monitors the operation of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards which apply to care homes. Where people’s liberty or freedoms were at risk of being restricted, the proper authorisations were in place or had been applied for. Medicines were managed safely as the staff responsible for administering people’s medicines were suitably trained and competent. Staff continued to receive induction, training and professional development to support them to meet people’s needs. People and their families described the staff as caring, kind and friendly and the atmosphere of the home as warm and inviting.

People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement. CQC regulates both the premises and the care provided, and both were looked at during this inspection. Yes, The Grange Nursing Home provides care designed to meet the challenges faced by people living with dementia. People were protected from avoidable harm as staff understood how to recognise signs of abuse and the actions needed if abuse was suspected. There were enough staff to provide safe care and recruitment checks had ensured they were suitable to work with vulnerable adults. When people were at risk of falling or skin damage staff understood the actions needed to minimise avoidable harm.

Opportunities to work in partnership with other organisations took place to ensure positive outcomes for people using the service. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice. The service is registered to provide accommodation and residential and nursing care for up to 63 older people.

This inspection report is written in a shorter format because our overall rating of the service has not changed since our last inspection. There are a further 2 well appointed spacious lounge areas, giving plenty of opportunity for social interaction with other residents, family and friends. However we appreciate that during your quiet times you may prefer to stay in your own room. Trained staff are encouraged to undertake further training to support them in maintaining their registration with the NMC. People received on-going health checks and support to access healthcare services. Staff were supported to carry out their roles and received an induction and on-going training and supervision. Staff were kind and caring and worked in a manner that respected people’s privacy and protected their dignity. After the comprehensive inspection, the provider wrote to us to say what they would do to meet legal requirements in relation to the breach. We undertook a focused inspection on the 5 April 2017 to check that they had followed their plan and to confirm that they now met legal requirements.
