Oak Lodge is a purpose built care home situated within a quiet residential area of Bitterne. The home offers comfortable accommodation surrounded by large landscaped gardens. The Grange Nursing Home provides nursing care and support to a maximum of 63 older people who may also be living with dementia or physical disabilities. There were 56 people using the service at the time of this inspection. People had been involved in assessments of their care needs and had their choices and wishes respected including access to healthcare when required. Their care was provided by staff who had received an induction and on-going training that enabled them to carry out their role effectively.

Reviews of The Grange Nursing Home
The Grange Nursing Home is a large nursing home situated in Southampton, with 63 beds. Additionally, The Grange Nursing Home is able to support people with physical disabilities. The service had an open and positive culture that encouraged involvement of people, their families, staff and other professional organisations. Staff spoke positively about the management and had a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities. Audits and quality assurance processes were effective in driving service improvements. The service understood their legal responsibilities for reporting and sharing information with other services.
Ratings are provided by Care Quality Commission and reflects the most recent report for this care home, which was published on 23 October 2018. At the last inspection on 6 February 2014 we found the service complied with all of the regulations we inspected. As soon as you enter the building, you will be aware of the homely environment which it provides and you will receive a warm and welcoming greeting from our Receptionist and Office staff. The main part of the building on the ground floor is open plan creating a spacious light and airy feel. This area is the main lounge and dining room linking to our beautiful conservatory with lovely views of the garden and terrace.
People could express their views about their care and felt in control of their day to day lives. Accommodation, meals, and assistance with personal care and medication. If this service has not had a CQC inspection since it registered with us, our judgement may be based on our assessment of declarations and evidence supplied by the service. The Grange Nursing Home Limited is registered as the provider that operates the care home. There are no other facilities registered by the same group in England.
We found one breach of the Health and Social Care Act Regulations 2014. You can see what action we told the provider to take at the back of the full version of the report. Safe recruitment practices were followed and appropriate checks had been undertaken, which made sure only suitable staff were employed to care for people in the home. There were systems and processes in place to protect people from harm.
The provider had undertaken an audit of the care plan system and introduced measures to improve consistency in risk assessment and risk reduction. Care and treatment plans were regularly monitored and reviewed to help ensure staff had up to date information relating to changes in people’s needs. People told us they were included in the assessment of their health and nutritional needs and preferences. They confirmed staff had the knowledge and skills to deliver effective care and that staff asked for their consent before providing treatment and support. Glen Lee Wavell Road, Bitterne, Southampton, SO18 4SB ★★★☆ Glen Lee is a medium size care home situated in Southampton, with a capacity of 33. The care home cares for older individuals including those with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. The Care Quality Commission has monitored the residency for more than seven years.
Opportunities to work in partnership with other organisations took place to ensure positive outcomes for people using the service. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice. The service is registered to provide accommodation and residential and nursing care for up to 63 older people.
Our staff are handpicked for their skills and clinical expertise, so that we can continue to provide and improve the highest standard of care for which we are known. All care staff are given the opportunity to undertake NVQ training. Medical care from a qualified nurse, and treatment for residents with illness or injuries. For services we haven't rated we use ticks and crosses to show whether we've asked them to take further action or taken enforcement action against them. – the service isn't performing as well as it should and we have told the service how it must improve.
At the time of our inspection the service was providing residential care to 60 older people. It provides a service for people with complex needs including, physical disabilities, mental health problems and acquired brain injuries. It is registered to accommodate a maximum of 78 people, and is situated on the edge of a residential area in Hedge End. We carried out an unannounced comprehensive inspection of this service on 5 and 6 January 2016. This was because people’s care plans did not always fully reflect people’s health and nutritional needs to provide staff with up to date information.
Our infection prevention and control inspections look at how well people using a service are kept safe from the spread of infections. We received positive feedback about the service from people who lived there and their friends and relatives. People had their care needs met by staff who were knowledgeable about how they were able to communicate their needs, their life histories and the people important to them. A complaints process was in place and people felt they would be listened to and actions taken if they raised concerns. People’s end of life wishes were known including their individual spiritual and cultural wishes. Activities took place in the home and were enjoyed by people seven days a week.
